COL. Benjamin  Stoddert  Ewell
    Born:  Washington D.C. 6/10/10,  the son of Dr.Thomas Ewell, a prominent physician. His Mother, Elizabeth, was a daughter of Benjamin Stoddert, the first Secretary of the Navy.

    Asst.Professor, Natural and Experimental Philosophy, West Point 8/31/35 -
    9/30/36. Resigned 9/30/36.
    Principal Asst. Engineer, Baltimore and Susquehanna Railroad, 1836-1839.
    Professor, Mathematics, Hampden-Sydney College, Va 1839-1842, and of
    Mathematics and Natural Philosophy, 1842-1846.
    Professor of Mathematics and Military Science, Washington College,
    Lexington, Va 1846-1848.
    Professor of Mathematics and  Acting President, College of William and
    Mary 1848-1849.
    Professor of Mathematics and Natural Science 1849.
    President 1854-1861. (William and Mary College)

    Appoited Acting Adjutant General on staff of General  Joseph E. Johnson
    11/24/62 and served as such for the remainder of the war.
    Returned to William and Mary retaining its Presidency until  1888, and
